BORING BACK REST RETROFITTED INTO AN IN-SITU 3 AXES MILLING, BORING MACHINE

Boring Back Rest converted into milling machine

A boring machine back rest which was not being used, was converted into a 3 axis machine with milling, drilling and boring capability.

Basic Features and Specs:

  • All geometrical accuracies restored.
  • A ram type milling head with a powered stroke of 350 mm mounted on the boring stay.
  • Existing vertical stroke of 1200 mm of boring back rest is made powered with worm reduction gearbox and motor.
  • A vector VFD used to vary speeds sleeplessly for vertical stroke and ram stroke.
  • The back rest is mounted adjacent to a plano miller and table of the plano miller is used for longitudinal traverse.
  • This machine with a powered ram of 350 mm can be used for milling, drilling and boring operations.
  • With a DRO this can be used for possibly any application.

A junked back rest of a floor borer has bloomed into a beautiful 3 axes in-situ machine in BHEL for milling, boring & drilling, virtually assuming the role of a floor borer at it’s fraction of a cost. The existing vertical & longitudinal slides are hand-scraped to achieve a very high level of geometrical accuracy. A self powered milling/ boring head is horizontally mounted on a newly introduced cross axis slide, which serves as the 500 mm stroke Z axis. The machine is being used by the customer to mill and drill on huge turbine housings.

DISCARDED LATHE BED RETROFITTED INTO A 3 AXES IN-SITU MILLING MACHINE

This is a 3 axes in-situ milling machine, built on the bed of a discarded lathe bed of 30 ft long. You may see a vertical column, mounted on the lathe bed. On the vertical housing, a horizontally mounted milling head and on the milling head a tilting type right angle head can be seen. This machine is in use L&T for more than the past 10 years. This machine is used for machining J groves on the giant size under-ocean pipes for weld-edge preparation, for which, L&T otherwise should have used a huge floor borer.
